Project summary

The project includes the analysis of the influence on the behaviour of the river of the placement of the dams and the core of the central area of the Mapocho river bed, as well as the study of sediment transport.

Project details

This hydraulic study project includes the analysis of the influence on the behaviour of the river of the placement of the dams and the core in the central area of the river bed. In this way, we obtained the river defences corresponding to the scenarios without and with the project.

Two studies were carried out, one using a one-dimensional numerical model (HEC-RAS programme) and the other using two-dimensional numerical modelling (IBER programme).

The project also included the study of sediment transport, the estimation of scour and the design of the protective rockfill for river bed works.

The scope of the project is located to the west of the Parque de Los Reyes, with the Mapocho River as the northern boundary and the Costanera Sur motorway as the southern boundary, approximately 200m upstream from the La Máquina Bridge as the western boundary and approximately 200m downstream of the Bulnes Bridge as the eastern boundary.

The main measures designed for the riverbed were the installation of four inflatable barriers that create water mirrors while at the same time allowing water to be captured to regenerate the river branch, a pedestrian path and the recreation of the river defences on the left bank. The river branch corresponds to a controlled diversion of the river based on inlet and outlet works with a system of sluice gates. Water is collected from the Mapocho in a settling basin.
