PROJECT DETAILS:

The basic overall construction project involved developing the cycle lane to be created in each street.

The project defined what was needed to build a set of new cycle lanes in the city of Barcelona.

The construction work for each lane is as follows:

  • Erasing and dismantling
  • Civil engineering
  • Traffic lights
  • Vertical signage
  • Horizontal signage
  • Lighting

The 2013-2018 Barcelona Urban Mobility Plan (PMU) set out a series of measures with the aim of giving more priority to pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging the use of public transport and reducing the use of private vehicles in order to enhance the city, road safety and the efficiency of the mobility system as a whole.

Barcelona's PMU takes into account the growing trend of cycling in the city, and has set the target of increasing the number of journeys made by bicycle by 67% compared to 2011.

Barcelona City Council therefore set the target of reaching 308 km of cycle lanes in 2018 – a 165% increase compared to the starting point of the 2015 Bicycle Strategy Measure, which started with a network of 116 km. Thus, by 2018, 95% of the city's population will have at least one cycle lane within 300 m of their home.

The installation of around 130 cycle lanes has therefore been planned in streets and other locations to complete the full rollout of the cycle lane network.
